3rd Spectral Book of Horror Stories – Dust Jacket

sbohs3-hb-absolute-finalIn 2013, Mark Morris, well-known author of such novels as Toady and the Obsidian Heart trilogy, put forward the idea to Spectral Press chief editor Simon Marshall-Jones the idea of a Pan Book of Horror-style annual anthology. Mark had always wanted to edit such a series, and luckily Simon immediately loved the idea, so, at FantasyCon 2014, the first volume was launched to much acclaim. Press-wise, it received many positive reviews and was nominated for various awards the following year.

Volume 2 was released the following year and now, at Halloween 2016, Volume 3, edited by Joseph Rubas, carries on the tradition very ably started by Mark. Already two further volumes are planned for 2017.

The 3rd Spectral Book of Horror Stories – Table of Contents Announcement by Editor Joseph Rubas

Let’s hand over to Joseph Rubas to announce the Table of Contents:

In April 2016, Gary Compton, of Tickety Boo Press, who had published my second short story collection After Midnight (2014) approached me about editing the third entry in the Spectral Book of Horror Stories series. “You’re kidding, right?” I asked. To me at least, the Spectral Book of Horror Stories is the top of the top. Sure, you might not get rich and famous after having your work in one, but growing up, I loved horror anthologies, especially the Pan Book of Horror Stories and the Zebra Book of Horror Stories. I read every single anthology I could get my hand on, and discovered work, by authors both known and unknown, that stays with me to this day. I loved the covers, the stories, the yellowed pages. The Spectral Book of Horror Stories has always reminded me of those old collections, and to be asked to edit it…it was like going from playing guitar in a suburban garage somewhere to playing Madison Square Gardens.

It was intimidating, but I think I did fairly well. Or rather, the authors did fairly well.

Okay, they did really well.

Here, then, is the table of contents for the Third Spectral Book of Horror Stories. It runs the gamut from psychological horror (“Portfolio’, “Disappearing in the Desert”) to supernatural horror (“It Knocks”, “Cotton Face”) to light science fiction (“The Eyes Have It”). Some of these writers have never been published before, and some have been in the business for over fifty years (William F. Nolan, who, with the late George Clayton Johnson, authored the novel Logan’s Run, will be 89 next spring). I am proud of them all.

Okay, enough. Here it is in all its glory:

Table of Contents

Announcing Spectral Book of Horror Stories 4 and 5

sbohs4-5We had a fantastic submissions call for the Spectral Book of Horror Stories 3, which is published on Halloween 2016; so acquiring editor, Dave de Burgh has decided to make it a twice yearly event.

Book 4 will be launched at Eastercon 2017 and book 5 on Halloween 2017.

So get your thinking caps on as submissions are now open for both. This is a paid for anthology so email us for details. Please make your stories better than good for this prestigeous collection.

The two covers are by Holly Madew who now has a hatrick in books 3-5.

Submissions to jrubas91@yahoo.com

Submission Guidelines:

Simply put, contemporary horror. It can be supernatural horror, body horror, psychological horror, or even dark science fiction, provided it takes place on earth. We tend more toward atmosphere than gore. It should be known up front that while the editor believes horror should shake the reader, stories containing abuse toward animals and children are less likely to be accepted. Violence, swearing, and sexual content are all allowed so long as they serve the plot.

All stories should have a modern setting. You don’t need to load your work with references to Facebook and iPhones (actually, we’d rather if you didn’t), but we’d like stories to reflect today’s world.

Stories should be sent to jrubas91@yahoo.com as RTF or Docx attachments. Work should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words. If your story is slightly over or under, query. Your submission should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12pt. Please include your name, address, email address, and phone number in the upper left corner, and a rough word count in the upper right. You may include your last name, story title, and page number in the upper right corner of each page after the first, but this is neither required nor recommended.

Please include a cover letter in the body of the email.

Pay is one pence (about one cent) a word for non-exclusive rights, and a contributor’s copy.

The deadline for volume four is January 25. (This is now closed due to an overwhelming response, the book is full)

The deadline for volume five is August 1.

New Collection from Joseph Rubas – After Midnight

Coming soon from Tickety Boo Press our first anthology from a lone author.

Joseph Rubas is an American horror writer. His stories put me on edge and in some cases sent shivers down my spine; certainly the collection was entertainment at its best! After Midnight includes tales of terror, crime, and the supernatural; all from a masterful wordsmith.

Unputdownable.

“Enter a world of darkness and fear, a dim, shadowy netherworld just beyond the veil, just past the threshold, just After Midnight.”

Release date April 2014
